Trézor.io/Start® | Starting Up Your Device | Trézor®

Quick, secure, and clear — this presentation walks you through unboxing, setup, firmware, backup, and first use of your Trézor hardware wallet.

1. Welcome — what this guide does

Overview

This guide is designed to get you from box to secure setup in a single session (~15–30 minutes). We'll cover initial connections, installing the official Trezor Suite, initializing your device, creating a secure backup (wallet backup), and best practices for everyday use.

Who should use this?

Anyone new to Trezor devices or needing a concise checklist to verify their setup: unboxing, initializing, firmware update, and basic operations like sending and receiving.

2. Unboxing & first inspection

What to expect in the package

Confirm the device model (Model One, Model T, or Trezor Safe series), the USB cable, recovery cards (or instructions for a backup method), and tamper-evident packaging. Do not use a device if packaging looks opened or tampered with — contact official support.

3. Install & open Trezor Suite

Official app

Use the official Trezor Suite app for the smoothest and safest experience. Download from the official start page and follow the platform-specific install steps for Windows, macOS, or Linux. The Suite guides the rest of the setup with clear on-screen instructions.

Tip

Only download Trezor Suite from the official site and verify installers when possible. Avoid third-party download mirrors or unofficial forks.

4. Initialize the device

Steps to create a new wallet

Plug the device in, open Trezor Suite, and choose “Create a new wallet.” You will be guided through setting a PIN (recommended) and generating a wallet backup. Read every on-screen prompt and confirm actions on the device itself to prevent remote manipulation.

PIN & passphrase

Choose a PIN you can remember and consider using an optional passphrase (adds another layer but treat it like a password — if lost, the funds may be unrecoverable).

5. Wallet backup (recovery)

Write it down, securely

Write your recovery words (wallet backup) on the supplied card or a metal backup device. Never store the backup digitally or share it. This is the only way to recover funds if the device is lost, damaged, or stolen.

6. Firmware updates & verification

Keep firmware current

When Trezor releases firmware updates, Trezor Suite will notify you. Apply firmware updates via the Suite and always verify firmware prompts on the device screen. Firmware updates frequently include security and compatibility improvements — apply them promptly.

Verification

Use the authenticity checks provided in the Suite when prompted; never approve a firmware change you did not initiate from your connected session.

7. First transactions & supported assets

Receive before sending

To confirm everything works, receive a small transaction first. Verify the receiving address on the device screen. Trezor supports many coins — check supported assets in the official list before moving large funds.

Third-party wallets

Trezor works with trusted third-party wallets; however, for most users Trezor Suite is recommended as the primary management app.

9. Troubleshooting & support

If something goes wrong

Check official guides and the support center first. If the device appears tampered with or behaves oddly, stop and contact official support. Official resources include step-by-step troubleshooting, firmware changelogs, and recovery instructions.
